Reminder two: because I got things running a little late this year, there's a far smaller cushion between sign-ups closing and assignments going out. Please minimize the risk that I'll have to delete your sign-up (which I don't relish doing) by putting your DNWs in your sign-up, alongside something, anything I can plausibly interpret as a positive direction for your creator. Loose lips sink ships; lingering "WIP"s risk snips. Bad quips deserve ellipse.

There is still a swaps period, so you will get a second go at securing an assignment that's right for you if your initial match doesn't spark the kind of joy that will get you over the finish line.

Basics
-Ask for 4-10 fandoms, 1-10 "relationship" tags in each, and in each of your requests, tick at least one of the additional tags that specifies what kind of gift you're interested in.

-Offer 1-10 fandoms, 1-10 "relationship" tags in each, and in each of your offers, tick at least two of the additional tags that specifies what kind of gift you're willing to create.

-In fffx's tagset, the "relationships" field covers characters, relationships, and worldbuilding. fffx uses OR matching - you will get, or create, a gift focusing on one of those tags. If you want specific characters to interact, select a single "relationship" tag that names all of them and uses & and / as appropriate.

-You can repeat fandoms in your requests - ie, you can ask for Original Work twice. You still need 4 unique fandom requests. Offers can be be as minimal as you like, but you will need someone to create for in order to receive an assignment.

-Please list dealbreaking Do-Not-Wants in your sign-ups. You must also put some other, positive information about your interests in each request - this can be a likes list, some prompts, or just talking about what you like about the canon & characters.

Please consider your DNWs carefully. "DNW: unrequested relationships" might suit a 1k relationship-based exchange that also matches on freeforms like "trapped together in an elevator", but may cause stress to someone considering a longer plot. DNWs should give guidance but not constrict your author to a plot that is dramatically narrower than the possibilities of the tag you requested.

-Participants must be aged 18 or over.

-Do not use "AI" generative tools for fic or art. Please reach out to me directly if you're not sure if your assistive tool counts.

-There is a space in Offers - Title - for "Notes to Mod". You can use this space to tell me more about your matching preferences, if you like. You can also leave it blank. If you have Do-Not-Match requests, I may follow up with you for more information - ie, how pinch hits will be handled.

-You are not eligible to sign up if you have not commented on previous gifts (check your name here) or discussed the situation with me. You are not eligible to sign up if you posted a placeholder for which I banned you, unless you've posted a make-up work.

-You are not eligible to sign up if you took part last year and either defaulted after check-in, didn't check in during check-in, or checked in then didn't post a work. However, if that happened to you in any of rounds 1-4, you're welcome to sign up again now.


How the Additional Tags Work
If you request Fanart: 1 x 10-Page Comic, you will receive 1 gift that is a comic of at least 10 pages or at least 40 panels. (Ie, if there are 40 distinct panels, it can have 9 pages. If there are 10 full pages, it's okay if there are only 36 panels.)

If you request Fanart: 1 x 10-Page Comic OR 2 x 5-Page Comics at Artist's Discretion, you may receive 1 gift that is a comic of 10 pages or at least 40 panels, or you may receive 2 gifts of 2 comics that are each half that long. (If selecting that option, I recommend also selecting Fanart: 1 x 10-Page Comic - there are no drawbacks. But you don't have to.)

If you request Fanfic: 1 x 10000-Word Fic, you will receive 1 gift that is a fanfic of at least 10,000 words.

If you request Fanfic: 1 x 10000-Word Fic OR 2 x 5000-Word Fics at Author's Discretion, you may receive 1 gift that is a fanfic of at least 10,000 words, or you may receive 2 gifts of 2 fic that are each half that long. (If selecting that option, I recommend also selecting Fanfic: 1 x 10000-Word Fic - there are no drawbacks. But you don't have to.)

It is possible that if you select both Fanart: 1 x 10-Page Comic OR 2 x 5-Page Comics at Artist's Discretion AND Fanfic: 1 x 10000-Word Fic OR 2 x 5000-Word Fics at Author's Discretion, you may get two gifts, one of which is a 20-panel comic and 1 of which is a 5,000-word fic. It is possible that if you select "2 x 5" tags for more than one fandom, you will get half-length gifts from two different fandoms. This is up to your creators.

You have to offer two Additional Tags. If you are someone who creates only in 1 medium, you can select both the Fanart tags, or you can select both the Fanfic tags.


Groups
Groups & Creator's Choice tags works like this:
"Thop the Gribble & the Splonks"
This means a story focusing on Thop and his platonic relationship with two characters who fit into the category of Splonk. The characters chosen from the Splonks are up to the creator.

"Gribbles/Splonks"
This means a sexual or romantic relationship including at least two Gribbles and at least two Splonks.

"Gribbles & ALL: Splonks"
This means a story featuring platonic relationships between at least two Gribbles and all of the characters who can be defined as splonks.

"Creator's Choice of Gribble & Splonks"
This means a story featuring platonic relationships between ONE Gribble and at least two Splonks.

When ALL is part of the tag, all members of the group must play significant roles in the work. If it isn't, the creator gets to choose which character feature. Requesters may not select within the tag or DNW members of the group.

Groups that are nominated in this way should be discrete and clearly defined.

If an existing group or Creator's Choice tag doesn't work for you, please use your supplementary nominations slots to nominate a tag between specific characters.

If requesting a group, I recommend using your prompts to talk about who you see as part of the group, just in case your creator has a different idea.



Unusual Things fffx Is Doing
-Comments are really important. This exchange is scheduled to reveal on March 14 2026; I recommend thinking twice abut signing up if you think you'll struggle to comment during the anonymous period or soon after. It is a requirement of this exchange that you must comment on any gifts you receive or, if you cannot, refuse the gift.

-Please don't link to a letter (an external document containing prompts, general preferences, etc) unless you're confident you can complete it by September 21. I know you can't predict the future - please just plan in good faith. Letters, of course, are optional - you don't have to link one at all. If you do link to a letter, please consider keeping a status message at the top to let readers know whether it's complete or not and when it was last updated.

-This exchange requires you to put prompts, or general likes, or something you like about the canon, in the AO3 form. It doesn't have to be long or eloquent, but something other than your DNWs is required. Ie, Optional Details are only optional for creators - they are not completely optional for requesters.

-Please sign up with one account only.

-There are also extra deadlines - September 21 for asking to swap your assignment for any other assignment & for finishing your letter, and November 30 for confirming you're still committed to your assignment, as well as the posting deadline of January 24.

Hello all,

I'm really sorry, but a family emergency came up and the sign-ups will be at least one further day delayed.

Given there's a buffer between the proposed sign-ups close time (7 September) and the date assignments go out (13 September), my current plan is to close sign-ups later (somewhere between 9 and 11 September) and send assignments out more quickly. Let me know if that will be a problem for you. I think the gap between sign-ups and assignments can be a nice feature in this slow-paced exchange - it gives you some breathing room to finish a letter or decide if you want to ask for a particular assignment - but assignment swaps are still a thing!

A further query post will come soon, and then sign-ups. I'm regretful I've had to call on your patience a couple of times already this round, but I'm grateful for that patience! I hope this will be the last delay on my side.

FFFX uses the Fandom and the Relationship tag slots for nominations. You can nominate relationships, single characters, and a worldbuilding option. Please read further for how to format each of these.

In the Fandom field, you can enter a canonical or non-canonical fandom (it's okay if there's no work for it yet on AO3). There are tips on labelling new fandoms here.


What to enter in the Relationships field
To nominate a relationship, please enter Character/Character (Fandom) (for romantic or sexual relationships) or Character & Character (Fandom) (for platonic relationships).

Do NOT put "Group" or another prefix in front of a relationship nomination.

The punctuation / and & is very important to indicate what sort of relationship it is.

Putting the fandom at the end of the nomination is really helpful to stop tag misbehaviour.

Multiple relationships in one tag are OK - ie, "Character/Character & Character/Character" means you're asking for two sets of pairings who are doing something together or otherwise relate to each other.

To nominate a character, enter them in the format "Char: Name (Fandom)" - that is, actually type out "Char: ", but swap in the appropriate name and fandom, such as Char: Lucy Pevensie (Narnia - Lewis).

All nominated characters should explicitly exist in the fandom where they're nominated. Original characters are also fine as long as you describe a character who could have existed in canon, such as Char: Original Force-sensitive Character (Star Wars Original Trilogy).

To nominate Worldbuilding for a canon, enter it in the format "Oth: Worldbuilding (Fandom)" (filling in the relevant fandom), e.g. Oth: Worldbuilding (Narnia - Lewis). Not "Other".

Group nominations (ie "The Marauders") should be formatted as follows:

• Nominations with a character and a group, like "Lily Evans & Marauders (HP JKR)" (where "Marauders" means four characters, namely Peter Pettigrew, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and James Potter) means that at least two members of the group must feature prominently in the gift. which two is up to the creator.


• "Creator's Choice of [GROUP]" means that one member of the group must feature prominently in the gift - the creator, not the recipient, gets to decide which.


• "All: [GROUP]" means that all members of the group must feature.

If a group is quite large (10+), if it is subjective who belongs in the group, or if it is hard to know who belongs in the group without having canon knowledge, I am less likely to approve that group. For example - much as I can appreciate why you might want to nominate a set like "Canonical DILFs", I will not approve it, as it adds work and ambiguity.

I will check throughout nominations about who might appear in a particular group. If you want to speed up the approval of your nomination, please drop me a line when nominating to explain which characters are included in a group.


Some fandom notes
Please separate out Marvel movies and separate TV shows - ie, Iron Man (Movies) rather than MCU.

I will not approve "Star Wars (All Media Types)". Trilogies are fine. Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) - All Media Types is an allowed exception. Please nominate The Acolyte as its own canon.

DC's Arrowverse includes (at least?): Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, and Batwoman.

"All Media Types" fandoms will probably be approved last, overall, because if someone else wants a more specific version of canon, we'd prefer to approve that. If you believe All Media Types is what's right for your fandom, please comment so we can discuss that. Assassin's Creed - All Media Types is fine.

Where possible, we will not approve a larger set of fandom and a subset that is covered by the larger set.

To nominate a relationship between characters who appear in different fandoms, please nominate them under Crossover Fandom and include the fandom for each. For example: Arya Stark (ASoIF)/Elsa (Frozen - Movies). Please be specific if the fandom name could refer to different versions and adaptations. You can ask for general crossovers between fandoms by nominating "Oth: Worldbuilding (Fandom 1 & Fandom 2)"

You can also nominate characters and groups under Original Work. Please indicate the genders of the characters if that is important to you. If someone requests Original Work characters or relationships with ambiguous genders, the preference of the person requesting takes precedence over the preference of the person offering. (But you can ask to add a more specific version to the tag set during sign-ups if that is an issue.)


Sign-up requirements
The following information about sign-ups may help you plan your nominations:

-You need to request at least 4 separate fandoms with at least 1 relationship in each - so every nominated fandom needs at least one character, or one relationship, or one worldbuilding tag nominated underneath it

-Offer minimums are set as low as possible - you just have to be able to offer for someone else's request

-It's fine to request or offer a fandom more than once using different tags (so you can divide up your art/fic requests/offers with different tags)


Other
Please feel free to use the comments to ask questions or brainstorm with others.

If you find it helpful to keep a record of your own nominations, please save that information off AO3, because we will clear personal nominations during sign-ups to make it easier to add things at that time.

Rules updates

-There is still a deadline for completing any letter (aka any external document describing your prompts and preferences that you link to in your AO3 sign-up). That deadline is September 21. Previously, the consequence when someone failed to complete their letter in time was that their letter link would be deleted. Specific deadlines and consequences are useful, but I wasn't happy with that consequence because I didn't think it actually helped anything. So, going forward, the consequence will be different. If you are matched to a recipient whose letter is incomplete, you may request to swap to another recipient at any time before the January deadline while the letter is still incomplete.

I will also encourage letter-writers to include a date of completion at the top, but this is not mandatory.

-I will continue to hold a check-in week on Dreamwidth; this year it'll be between 23 and 30 November. However, this year I will also send an email reminder of the check-in to the email associated with everyone's AO3 account. Further, if you find check-ins very difficult, and you have successfully completed at least one previous round of FFFX, you are welcome to discuss with me during sign-ups whether you can be excused from checking in.

-Last year I was asked if there were any particular rules about the proportion of your requests that are recursive fandoms (ie, you've nominated someone else's fanfic to request, because it includes a permission statement allowing you to do so). There weren't, so let's try the idea that at least two of your requests must NOT be recursive fandoms.

-Reminders rather than new rules, but: If you defaulted in round 4 or earlier, you are now welcome to sign up again (Exception: if you posted a placeholder and were banned for that reason). However, participants who failed to comment on gifts are not welcome while that requirement remains unfulfilled. This is an excellent time to check if your comment went through on a previous gift. I especially want to thank the co-mods who helped me sort tags and check letters at the start of the round - there would not have been a round 5 without their help. Then there are so many other people who deserve thanks: pinch hitters, beta readers, treat creators, commenters, prompters, nominators, and anyone who said anything cheerful anywhere about this exchange. (Or pointed out an error.)

General feedback; letter completion; check-in period
Before next round, I will review the rules for recursive fandoms (ie, what can be nominated, is it okay for recursive fandoms to be your whole sign-up). These questions arose last round and while a case-by-case approach has worked okay so far, clarity is useful.

I will also put up a franchise post for discussing how we split/merge some fandoms where this is often a question (Marvel TV/cinema, DCU, etc).


Letter completion
FFFX has a rule that if you link an external document ("letter") to supplement your prompts, that letter MUST be available and complete by a set date after sign-ups close. The idea is to make sure creators can get started with confidence and are not wondering indefinitely if a letter will appear or gain content.

While I think the overall principle is sound, implementation is a problem. I have been really grateful for help checking letter completion in the past, but it's a lot of work and can be hard to get right. Then there's the question of what to do if a letter misses the deadline. I can remove the link - but that feels more like a punishment than a constructive result, and I'm not sure it actually helps a creator. Sure, your recipient didn't complete their letter, but now if you want to refer to their half-finished thoughts or check for previous letters, you have to do a lot more work.

Because of that, I have two proposals:

1. Requiring FFFX participants to put either a date at the top of their letter to say when it was completed, OR a statement that this is a general likes list. This would make letter checking much easier, but might be burdensome for participants. What do you think?

2. FFFX allows creators to swap their assignments nearly-at-will for a short period after assignments go out, and then at any later time before the deadline as long as you're swapping to a pinch hit. Instead of checking letters and imposing a penalty, maybe I should offer creators an option: you can swap to another assignment of your choice all throughout the creator period if your recipient's letter is incomplete. This seems like it might give creators more flexibility (if an incomplete letter is causing difficulty) and be more constructive overall. What do you think?


Check-in period
FFFX has a very long creation period, and so creators are required to check in roughly halfway in, during a week-long period that is set at the start of the exchange. This helps me seek pinch hitters "early" for recipients whose creators withdraw at that time or appear not to be involved at the exchange. It's fun for me to see (voluntary! optional) snippets from people who share those at the time. But you aren't required to give a progress update - this is the equivalent of me saying Marco and you saying Polo.

However, every year there are people who forget that this was a thing, and turn up months later, which is nice (extra gift!) but awkward - it can mean I recruited a pinch hitter when one wasn't necessary, and technically, the first person defaulted, but they may not realize they aren't getting a gift. Additionally, some people are unavoidably away from the period during check-in week, so checking in is burdensome - and not being able to check in in November doesn't mean you're unable to post a work in January.

I don't feel as strongly about changing the check-in period because I think it does work for many people. But I'd be interested to know how you feel about it. Maybe I should make the check-in completely optional, send an email at the same time, and keep the default deadline, so instead of "if you don't check in, you're defaulted", it becomes "here are several warnings, but I assume you're still participating unless you default".

If you go to the collection, you can click Post to Collection at top right, and the new work form will fill in the collection for you (you still have to fill in the recipient).

DNWs
Please check your work to make sure it does not include your recipient's Do-Not-Want | DNW topics. Yes, even if you checked them before you began writing or planning out your comic. Sometimes DNWs can creep in as you change course on a work or edit it. Sometimes you can come to a different understanding of a DNW through canon review. If your recipient has a DNW for something in canon, and you included the thing, please check through me (mod.modzilla@gmail.com) if that thing is okay.

It's a negative situation for everyone if a creator puts effort into a work but, by accident or because of differing interpretations, includes unwanted content that disappoints or upsets the recipient. I don't have the capacity or knowledge to check all works against DNWs - so please, check this yourself. If you are using a beta reader, I also recommend you give them the list of DNWs and ask them to review the work against the list.
