Edit to say I forgot the argument part, 🤦🏻‍♀️: They are played by 2 separate actors. From X-Men: First Class onward, the movies establish an alternate timeline distinct from the timeline in the 2000s trilogy. AO3 has umbrella tags (AMT, Movieverse, and Comicverse) as well as more specific tags (various comic timelines, Original Timeline Movies, and Alternate Timeline Movies), so there is precedent for separation. They also just feel like very different characters to me so I wanted to make clear which one I’m requesting / which one a creator would be offering.
